&lt;p&gt;Thanks to everyone who attended our mobile commerce event last Monday. Apologies to most of you - who we had to turn away once all the passes were quickly claimed. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Our panel represented 4 key segments of the mobile commerce ecosystem. It was moderated by someone who&amp;#8217;s been helping drive ecosystem innovation since before most of us started dreaming about the revolution sparked when mobile tech entered the realm of bricks-and-mortar commerce.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Spencer Spinnell (Director of Emerging Platforms, Google / Google Wallet)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Jacob Styburski (Director of Product Management, American Express / Serve)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Jonty Kelt (CEO, Group Commerce)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Mike Brody (Co-founder, Payfone)&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here&amp;#8217;s my attempt to extract a few salient points from the evening:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Mobile Monday New York members are (really) excited about Google Wallet - what it means for the industry and about being able to give it a try.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;If you&amp;#8217;re a developer and want to get involved in mobile commerce, think about the gaps you could bridge. Jonty from Group Commerce said, on average, consumer mobile visits to his deals network are 4x longer, but mobile conversion percentages are significantly lower than desktop.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;While at Citigroup, Mike Garelik built my personal favorite early market trial - with the MTA / NYC subway! Mike&amp;#8217;s knowledge of  - and often involvement with - key implementations and players knit our diverse panel together for energetic conversation and spirited debate.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Mike Brody thinks carrier-billed payments (including those enabled by Payfone) will be big in the US, and even more important in markets where consumer banking and credit are less pervasive.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;At the same time as it innovates, seemingly much quicker than competitors, American Express maintains a clear and strong commitment to security. In other markets, seemingly heavy-handed security policies can be a barrier to innovation. In mobile commerce, it&amp;#8217;s an enabler.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;There’s a growing demand and hunger for knowledge on the topic.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; The competition of barcode format/platform differences is somewhat  appreciated for technology advancements, but shunned for confusion to  consumers.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; There are underlying ISO standards and telecommunication factors  impacting mobile barcodes that can quickly confuse and overwhelm  marketers.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; There’s consensus that marketers need to provide contextual  assistance beside codes. (i.e. get a reader app, “scan to ____”, back-up  alternatives like SMS or links, etc.)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; The complexity of testing barcode scannability is growing. (i.e. more readers / mobile devices / barcode types, etc.)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Most industry experts see NFC and 2D barcodes as potential partners/sisters, not replacements, in the mobile channel.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Industry experts don’t fully agree on best practices or the future  of mobile barcodes. (Most differences surface between  providers/platforms and UX/marketing specialists.)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Although designer mobile barcodes are possible, marketers need to  verify if design is necessary and test to ensure design isn’t hindering  scan conversion.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; There’s an increasing need for large players and marketers in the industry to lead by example on best practices.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Many tech-savvy folks are quick to use mobile barcodes without  considering purpose or value-add for the user. (This trend seems to  align with the fact that most developers also aren’t in tune with UX  design.)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Most folks haven’t done testing of codes to ensure scannability.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Many attendees claimed awareness of mobile barcodes, but still were uncertain of how to effectively use them.&lt;/li&gt;
